I don't know what the original poster had in mind, but if this thread was started in the spirit of my "Crappy games that you love" thread, "great" wouldn't mean popular. Great would mean, a game that you could tell was probably a very good game while you were playing it, but that you just didn't enjoy for some reason.

Interesting, everyone seems to hate Morrowind and Half-Life 2.

I love both of them.

However i do hate DOOM 3. Buts its not exactly "great" its just popular.

And Everquest, one look at that and i kept away from RPGS for years.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Wind Waker

Both were great games, and I really did feel compelled to actually complete Wind Waker, but well... it's been years now, and their still sitting on the shelf...

Heh, it seems like the people who love Final Fantasy absolutely hated 8 and those who hated the Final Fantasy series, really like ff8. Personally, I like them all, just for some reason I have trouble getting into the old FF's cause I have this obsession with complex and confusing storylines. Xenogears and Xenosaga are a good example of that, except I think the gameplay in the Xenosaga games is EXtremely lacking in all the areas that gives RPGs any sort of replay value.

Personally, I despise Diablo 2. All my friends were obsessed with it when it first came out and some of them are still obsessed with it today. I'll laugh if D2 goes under when GW comes out.

I don't have any particular love for the Splinter Cell series, give me Metal Gear any day.

Doom 3 is also a game I think the world could have easily done without. Half-Life 2 has set the standard for graphics and physics which makes D3 obsolete... the problem with Half-Life 2 is that it was a beautiful game, just lacking in adding anything New to the world of FPS.

I've never been a big fan of Battlefield 1942...

I enjoyed Morrowind for a while. By the time the expansions came out, however, I had burned myself out on the game.

In terms of production value and quality, I'd say Half Life 2 was awesome. I didn't fall to the hype and walked into the game with no expectations other than a solid game... and I got exactly that. If you expect the BEST you'll usually be dissapointed. There were stretches of the game that were a little drawn out, but on the whole, I can't say anything bad about it. The ending, I felt, was a little cut short and I did feel cheated. Overall, can't complain.

HOWEVER... Medal of Honour: Allied Assault. Wow. Some people love this game... I dunno, I wasn't impressed. Not to mention, after you trudge through the hell that is this game, you are treated to a complete lack of any discernable ending. It simply fades to black and text appears, stating "The End" - Roll Credits. I've never, ever, EVER, in a game felt so disgusted with a game in my entire life as a gamer. I waited until the absolute end of the credits... hoping that it was just teasing me. No. It wasn't. There's no excuse for that.

Call of Duty... hell of a lot better than MoH:AA... but it IS another WWII game. Sure, it's fun for a little bit and the missions are kept interesting, on the whole... but I felt the game was just a little to transparent for my tastes. I don't mind scripted events in games... hell, they're expected and required. However, I didn't appreciate how the game tried to sell me the idea that I wasn't an "army of one", but part of a unit that I was in... no, this simply isn't true. It wasn't as if I was fighting WITH a group of AI allies... it was more that I was fighting NEAR a group, but they'd only move forward if I hit a certain trigger point in the level. To boot, these trigger points were painfull obvious and it's clear that no effort, whatsoever, was given to hide the scriptedness of it.

Doom 3... another example of ridiculously plain as day scripting thrown in my face. After the first couple "levels" I soon found it increasingly easier to predict when a "scary" moment was about to occur. Not only this... the game didn't even let me try and be clever. It might be clear that the pillar to your left, casting a dramatic shadow, houses at least one monster... but if you try to throw a grenade (or similar weapon) into the area, you'll hit nothing. It's not until you hit an obvious trigger point that this being will suddenly lunge from the blackened area and attack... at this time, an equally "scary" monster will spawn behind you. Call me crazy, but after the first level... it simply wasn't having the same effect. About the "darkness" of the game and such... I enjoyed it. It really reminded me of classics like System Shock 2 or more recent games like Clive Barker's Undying. I enjoyed the levels and atmosphere... but the gameplay was really lacking.

Unreal 2. Ok, this isn't a "great" game by anyone's standards but I'd like to say that I was really dissapointed by this game. If it were any MORE generic, they would have to call it Halo. Nah, I'm just kidding, Halo is better than Unreal 2.

My biggest gripe with Halo is not the game itself, but the promotion of it. I dunno about you, but I remember hearing people labeling it as "innovative" and other such nonsense. Then again, gaming publications throw words like that out when talking about Operat--- oh wait, I mean Codename Eag--- no, I mean Trib--- shit, I mean Hal--- damnit, I mean Halo. Oops, I already mentioned Halo. Seriously, original ideas don't exist in mass market games. That's not to say mass market games are BAD. I love games... big or small, wildly popular to the totally obscure... as I'm sure most of you do. I just don't like to see phrases like "redifines the First Person Shooter Genre" slapped on games like Halo... I give the creators and publisher respect though. There are smart people behind projects like that.

That's all the come immediatly to mind...

there was only one tactics for PS and from that came advanced for gameboy advanced... and tatics was in deed an outcast of that series but playing the same game style every new story gets lame fast.. its like playing pong for 48 hours straight. One reason i liked it was it was a high strategy game and crafty turn based battles making it quite hard to those who havnt played and beaten it a few times.

Wish they would have made a tactics 2 since the first one made greatest hits in a few months.

Counter Strike (If you could call it great)
Any of the great RTS games, Generals, Warcraft, Starcraft etc.
Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. I don't really have HL2, but it just got boring.
Baldur's Gate, NWN, KOTOR
Most sports games
Bloodlines was good the first time round, but oh so tedious to play again.
I tried to play the early FF games but they couldn't hold my interest.
